Late in 1982, after attending a party with my wife hosted by a DJ from a local radio station, I was so inspired by the idea of providing music “on location” that I changed careers to start Trans Audio Mobile Music. The early days included work anywhere it could be found: night clubs, schools, birthday parties, bowling banquets and the occasional wedding reception. My first real booking paid $45 a night to provide the equipment and play six hours of non-stop music in a smoky bar. As they say, “you’ve got to start somewhere.” But in the early days, the love of music, the fun of seeing people dance and gaining experience had to come first.
I “learned the ropes” by hauling around records, wiring early sound systems and playing oldies and the hottest current music. Thanks to the hot music of the mid 80s from Michael Jackson, Prince and Lionel Richie, it was “automatic” to fill a dance floor with any of their songs. When people would dance hard, the old dance floors would literally move, so I’m sure it looked funny to see me holding a turntable up a little bit to keep the needle from skipping! (Thank goodness, times changed with the introduction of the CD in 1987.) But hey, it worked and the word spread fast about Trans Audio.
By the late 80s, Trans Audio grew rapidly to include six DJs, office staff and a storefront in Merrillville, Indiana to meet the demand for wedding receptions and private parties. The music was great and people loved dancing to the original song performed by the original artist. Our DJ staff was very personable, too, as responsibilities grew to make announcements and host reception events. Trans Audio’s reputation grew, too. Remarkably, during 1990 we played for 400 events. As you may imagine, by January of 1991, we welcomed the seasonal “break!”
In early 1991, we moved to our present location just off the square in Crown Point, Indiana. Soon after, the decision was make to specialize primarily in wedding receptions. Although it reduced our total number of bookings, it also enabled Trans Audio to focus on and devote more time to perfecting our reception services. We sensed that our work was important to other people; as our responsibilities grew, we gave reception bookings the complete attention they deserved. (After all, a DJ service has one chance to make a reception a success; nobody gets to come back next Saturday to make it right!) As it all turned out, we discovered that there really is nothing like pleasing a bride and groom. Often, memories of receptions can last a lifetime. Even now, our paths cross with couples we played for 15 or 20 years ago. After the smiles and hellos, the next thing they talk about is the great time they had. How cool is that to be part of such an important day?
Much has changed over the years, especially the advent of technology and its application to the mobile music business. (We are careful to embrace only what serves the customer well. When technology helps meet the needs and benefits our customers, we make it immediately available.) But most of all, we understand that the mobile music business is a very personal relationship between us and the bride and groom. It’s not just music that we provide; it’s also intangibles like trust and peace of mind that mean everything to someone anticipating their wedding day.
As we look to the future, we would welcome the opportunity to bring clarity of the spoken word and elegant music to your ceremony. When it’s time to celebrate, we’ll power up your dance music’s fun factor and confidently host your entire reception. Let’s make memories for you, too!
